Jamie Carragher calls Michael Carrick’s position at Man Utd ‘untenable’
Michael Carrick’s position at Manchester United is “untenable” after dropping captain Bruno Fernandes, according to Jamie Carragher.
“It’s the right decision to part ways,” Carragher said on Sky Sports last night following the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth. “For Michael Carrick as much as Manchester United right now.”
He added: “It’s become untenable. Carrick wants to be changed. He doesn’t want to be sat in the dugout with those players. Can you imagine going into the training ground tomorrow with Bruno Fernandes after not bringing him on? He wants to be put out of his misery tonight.”

Manchester United’s upcoming fixtures
Does Michael Carrick last until the international break? There are five days between now and Saturday’s trip to Chelsea in the Premier League, which is then followed by home games against Roma in the Champions League and Aston Villa. If United do make a change the new boss would not have an easy start with visits to Liverpool and Sporting to come after the internationals.
31 Oct: Chelsea (A) – Premier League
3 Nov: Roma (H) – Champions League
8 Nov: Aston Villa (H) – Premier League
22 Nov: Liverpool (A) – Premier League
25 Nov: Sporting (A) – Champions League
28 Nov: Brentford (H) – Premier League
2 Dec: Newcastle (A) – Premier League

Michael Carrick’s Manchester United have become fractured
A few months ago, Michael Carrick was the manager who came in with the clarity of thought to find a formation straight away, the credibility and personality to get the support of his players, the decisiveness to make a series of successful substitutions.
Now? He lost to Bournemouth using Ruben Amorim’s system and with the armband worn by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s chosen captain, Harry Maguire. The skipper who won Footballer of the Year after the initial, dramatic improvement under Carrick, Bruno Fernandes, was dropped after criticising the manager’s tactics, was left unused on the bench as a misfit, Joshua Zirkzee, and a teenager, Shea Lacey, came on ahead of him.
A relationship feels fractured; perhaps not turning to Fernandes was a sign Carrick realised he had reached the end. The Portuguese has been much United’s best player since Sir Alex Ferguson retired but he lost form towards the end of Erik ten Hag’s reign. The accusation is that too many United footballers help get managers the sack. Carrick could join the list of the dismissed.

A crisis summit at Manchester United’s training ground?
Sky Sports News are reporting that Michael Carrick arrived at Manchester United’s training ground this morning – with sporting director Jason Wilcox also arriving.
The Sun’s Manchester United reporter Samuel Luckhurst adds that Omar Berrada, the club’s CEO, and captain Bruno Fernandes are also both at Carrington this morning.
That is despite United’s players having a day off following yesterday’s defeat to Bournemouth, where Fernandes was an unused substitute.

Old Trafford’s show of support for Michael Carrick as fans turn on players
Manchester United supporters unveiled a banner displaying the message “standards” as the club fell to a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth in the Premier League.
The supporters also applauded under-fire Michael Carrick as he walked down the tunnel, but booed the players, following the dismal loss at Old Trafford.
It was significant, too, that there was no chanting for captain Bruno Fernandes, who was dropped to the bench after his criticism of Carrick’s tactics.

Bookies suspend betting on Michael Carrick’s future
Bookmakers have suspended betting on Michael Carrick’s future following Manchester United’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday.
Eddie Howe, the former Newcastle manager, is the favourite to take charge if Carrick is sacked before Saturday’s trip to Chelsea in the Premier League.
Carrick is set to become the first Premier League manager to leave his job this season, which would leave United looking for a third managerial appointment since the start of the year.

Reports: Man Utd hierarchy hold crisis talks on Carrick’s future
Manchester United’s hierarchy have held crisis talks on Michael Carrick’s future, according to reports this Monday morning.
Carrick’s position felt untenable following the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday as the dropping of captain Bruno Fernandes, following his criticism of the manager, failed to inspire an improved performance.
Instead, another dismal display left Carrick on the brink, with director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada now set to meet to discuss the club’s next decision.
The Guardian have reported that Eddie Howe, the former Newcastle manager, is the “preferred candidate” of Wilcox and there has already been contact between him.
The Telegraph reports that Julian Nagelsmann, available after leaving Germany following the World Cup, is also on the list of candidates.
Aston Villa’s Unai Emery and Brighton’s Fabian Hurzeler are also admired but United are unlikely to be able to afford their compensation packages.

Man United’s problems are much bigger than Michael Carrick – and much harder to fix

Gary Neville accuses Man United players of downing tools
“Michael Carrick is a brilliant man. He’s a man of integrity, of credibility, of decency, of professionalism, of high-quality football and consistency and reliability. Everything the group of players in that dressing room aren’t.
“And he’s going to suffer for it because he’s not been able to deliver. It’s been too much for him in these last few months. He’s not been able to get a tune out of them and they’ve turned on him.
“I know that because if Bruno has turned on him publicly, with that little statement, imagine what they’re like behind the scenes.
“If that’s your captain saying that, imagine what they’re saying in the dressing room behind closed doors when no one’s listening. That’s horrific.
“There’s a few of them that don’t go to bed at the right time, don’t eat the right things, don’t think about Manchester United every single minute of every day, and aren’t living and breathing this football club as they should be – and as professionals should.
“Why? Because it’s gone to their heads. But they still walk around like King William. They are nothing, some of those players.”

Gary Neville attacks ‘nothing’ Man United players for giving up on Michael Carrick
Gary Neville launched an attack on Manchester United’s players and accused them of giving up on Michael Carrick, who is under mounting pressure following the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday.
The manager dropped captain Bruno Fernandes after his criticism of Carrick’s tactics following the 4-1 defeat to Como in midweek while Lisandro Martinez spoke out against the United hierarchy following the loss at Atletico Madrid earlier this month.
United are now without a win in eight games and Neville, a former team-mate of Carrick’s under Sir Alex Ferguson, was critical of the current squad’s professionalism and standards following a remarkable unravelling under Carrick this season.
