Man City midfielder Rodri has left the door open to joining Real Madrid this summer.
Speaking in an interview with Spanish radio station Onda Cero (quotes via the BBC), the 29-year-old would not rule out making a move to the Bernabeu:
“There are more players who have taken that path. Not directly, but over time. You can’t turn down the best clubs in the world… I have one year remaining on my contract. There will be a point when we will have to sit down and talk and have a dialogue.”
Understandably, supporters on X are very unhappy about Rodri’s comments, and some are calling for him to be sold:
What a sell out this guy is. Of you pop anyways

We need to start looking for his replacement. The question is who can replace Rodri😭

At this point I say we let him go, get Elliot Anderson and do a double pivot with him and Nico in that midfield. We will just fine

Please he should just leave. I can’t believe he’s even considering Real Madrid

Tonali plus Elliot Anderson in the summer that’s fine by me. Obviously if Rodri goes that is.

Rodri looks set for Etihad exit
Unless the midfielder’s remarks are some sort of negotiating tactic to get himself a better contract with City, it seems like he is looking to move away from Manchester this summer.
With Rodri’s current deal set to expire in 2027, the club will have a decision to make, but everything points towards the player leaving after seven years at the Etihad Stadium.
Man City are poised for a midfield overhaul
Rodri is unlikely to be the only midfielder departing the club over the coming months. Captain Bernardo Silva has given no indication that he will sign a contract extension. As things stand, he will become a free agent on July 1st. Mateo Kovacic only has a year remaining on his deal, too. Buy a Man City home shirt from the PUMA store here.
Several players, including Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton and Sandro Tonali, have been linked with joining the club, which suggests Director of Football Hugo Viana is clearly planning for a revamp in the middle of the park.
