Frank Lampard is keen to bring Chelsea forward Jesse Derry to Coventry next season, talkSPORT understands.

The Sky Blues boss and Stamford Bridge legend is eyeing up a loan swoop for 18-year-old Derry, ahead of what looks set to be his side’s first season back in the Premier League since 2001.

Coventry stand on the cusp of promotion, requiring just one point from their remaining four Championship games to guarantee their place in the top-flight next term.

And it seems Lampard is already preparing for life in the Premier League, with one transfer already being lined up.

Keen to use his Chelsea connections, Lampard is looking to bring highly-rated youngster Derry to the Coventry Building Society Arena.

This move could prove beneficial for both parties, with the teenager who is the son of ex-QPR and Crystal Palace star Shaun Derry – viewed as a top prospect for the future.

However, Derry has little experience in senior football, featuring just twice for Chelsea in the FA Cup this term.

He has primarily featured in Premier League 2, where he has chipped in with six goals and three assists from 17 outings.

That is in addition to firing in five goals from eight appearances in the UEFA Youth League.

Should Lampard pull off the loan signing of Derry, it wouldn’t be the first time he has turned to Chelsea’s academy talents as a manager.

Whilst in charge of Derby in the 2018/19 season, the Blues’ all-time record goalscorer brought in a young Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori to play a key part in his side’s promotion push.

There are high hopes Derry can bring his early promise into senior football, having passed each test of his career with flying colours so far.

An England Under-19 international, the young forward began his football education in Crystal Palace’s academy, where he was named their U18s player of the season in the 2023/24 campaign after scoring 16 goals in 22 appearances.

His exploits drew interest from Chelsea, who brought him to west London on a four-year contract in 2025.

Derry then netted on his debut for Chelsea’s U21 side in a 5-0 win at Newcastle, and his continued his strong form since then.

The youngster’s impressive start to life in west London was rewarded in February, as he made his senior debut in the Blues’ 4-0 FA Cup thrashing of Hull.

He came on as a 77th-minute replacement for Estevao and impressed in his brief cameo, before going on to feature off the bench in his side’s extra-time victory over Wrexham in the following round.

    Family affair

Derry has followed in the footsteps of dad Shaun who made 568 appearances as a player across a 20-year playing career.

Despite spells at Queens Park Rangers, Sheffield United, Leeds and Portsmouth, Shaun is fondly remembered for his time at Crystal Palace where he made 222 appearances over two separate spells.

He achieved promotion to the Premier League with Palace via the play-offs in 2004 and repeated the feat with QPR in their Championship title winning campaign of 2010/11.

The 48-year-old hung up his boots in 2015 before venturing into management at Notts County and Cambridge.

After a spell coaching in Crystal Palace’s academy, Shaun was promoted to first team coach under then manager Patrick Vieira, before carrying out the same role under Gary O’Neil at Wolves, but left after the manager’s sacking in 2024.

    When can Coventry get promoted?

Coventry’s promotion to the Premier League looks all but confirmed, who sit top of the Championship on 85 points.

This is 12 points clear of third-placed Millwall, whose goal difference is 33 goals inferior with four games left to play.

This means the Sky Blues can get promoted if they avoid defeat in their next match against Blackburn on Friday, which will be broadcast live on talkSPORT 2.
