Harry Kane is open to a Premier League return and not necessarily to return to Tottenham Hotspur, talkSPORT understands.

The Bayern Munich striker’s release clause will drop from £67million to £56m next summer, opening up an opportunity for Premier League clubs to bring him back to England.

Although there’s no guarantee Kane leaves Bayern next summer, Bayern sporting director Max Eberl told German newspaper BILD that the 32-year-old is “old enough to make his own decisions, with or without a clause.”

Kane is just two away from a century of Bayern goals having joined the German champions from Tottenham in 2023 for a fee in the region of £87m. The now-departed Daniel Levy negotiated matching rights as part of the deal.

Kane is contracted until 2027 and won his first career trophy last season as Bayern lifted the Bundesliga title and Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup.

Kane is certainly not agitating for, or engaging over, a potential move this early in the season, with his focus instead on winning more silverware with Bayern and putting on a strong showing in what could well be to be his final World Cup for England.

However, talkSPORT has learned Kane still wants to return to the Premier League one day in order to try and break Alan Shearer’s all-time scoring record. Kane left Spurs with 213 Premier League goals and needs 261 to surpass Shearer.

Talk of a return to north London has been fuelled in recent days after Thomas Frank admitted he’d love to see Kane in a Tottenham shirt again.

“There’s a lot of Tottenham fans including myself who would like to see Kane back,” said Frank earlier this week. “He’s welcome. If he wants to join us, he’s more than welcome.”

However, Kane is understood to be open to playing for another Premier League club as well, despite his strong ties to Spurs, where he scored 280 goals in 435 games between 2010 and 2023.

Prior to Kane’s move to Bayern, he was keen on joining Manchester United. Club-to-club talks did not go smoothly, with Man United concluding Levy didn’t want to sell to a Premier League rival.

Figures quoted to United officials were significantly higher than the fee Bayern eventually paid, and United walked away without ever placing a bid.

Man United could yet be in the market for an experienced striker in 2026, even though adding a new number six is the top priority.

Rasmus Hojlund is set to join Napoli permanently as the Italian side have an obligation to purchase the Danish striker if they qualify for the Champions League this season.

And although Joshua Zirkzee remains appreciated and Matheus Cunha can lead the line, Ruben Amorim is in favour of another proven Premier League scorer, which was why he liked the idea of Manchester United bidding for Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins this summer.

In the end, Man United decided to sign Benjamin Sesko instead leaving them with a younger front-line that also includes talented 17-year-old Chido Obi, who got opportunities last season due to squad injuries.

There has been no formal contact between Kane and either Spurs or Man United over a return to England to date, but several Premier League and European clubs are now aware Kane could leave Bayern next summer. Barcelona are another club alert to Kane’s situation.

talkSPORT understands staying in Europe is the most likely scenario if Kane departs one-year early from his current contract.

Tottenham title prediction made if Harry Kane returns after secret release clause revealed

A move to Saudi is not of appeal, despite an approach back in 2023, while America could come later in his career.

Bayern have not ruled out trying to get Kane to extend either, but won’t stand in the England forward’s way if he decides to exit. And his reduced release clause makes approaches more likely in 2026.

    Kane making history

It has been an incredible start to the season for Kane at Bayern Munich.

His two goals in a 3-1 win over Chelsea in the Champions League ensured he became the Englishman with the most goal contributions in Champions League history.

He surpassed David Beckham’s record as he continues to smash UEFA’s top competition.

Kane is yet to taste glory in Europe, but he came close with Spurs in 2019 when they lost to Liverpool 2-0 in the Champions League final.

Since joining Bayern, the Bundesliga giants have made it to the semi-finals, where they lost to Real Madrid.

Last year, they only made the last eight despite Kane slamming in 13 goals.

But he will hope this year all that changes, and he can add the Champions League to his trophy collection before he potentially moves on.

Whatever happens to Kane, he will remain a top goalscorer wherever he goes.
